  • Trim size?
Trim size is the width and height of the book or journal. A common trim size is 6 inches by 9 inches.
  • Page Count?
It’s necessary to have an idea of page count before providing a print quote. The cost of paper is one of the major costs involved in printing a journal. To provide an accurate quote we need to have a general idea (within 8 pages if possible) of expected page count. Page count can change if needed, but this will affect the final cost if it causes the gain or loss of one or more signatures.
  • Signatures?
Sheet-fed and web presses print on large sheets of paper that contain multiple pages. A 16-page signature is very common. This means that final page count must be divisible by 16. Other signature lengths are 8 and 32.
  • Time to design?
This is the most flexible part of the process. As a rule of thumb, please allow three to four weeks for a design to become final. This will include viewings of draft designs by you and design modifications based on your input.
  • Time to produce?
Once a design is completed, it is ready to receive text, art, photos, etc. This process is referred to as typesetting. However, the process of readying the text, art, photos, etc., requires the bulk of the time to publish a book or journal. Text must be organized, styled (words italicized, page breaks inserted, etc.), and copyedited prior to typesetting. Photos and any other art pieces to be included must be translated into electronic format at printer specifications. This usually involves scanning at a high resolution. We can perform all of these tasks for you or only the ones you need.
  • Time to print?
Printers schedule jobs based on availability of equipment and staffing to run the equipment. In general, 30 days is the minimum amount of time a printer will need to process, print, and bind a job. This includes time for you to review page proofs and check copy.
  • Payment?
Upon acceptance of a quote by you, we will prepare a purchase order. An initial payment of 25% is required after the purchase order is signed. Depending on the scope of the job, payments will correlate with the achievement of milestones such as completion of design, completion of galleys, and delivery of books.
  • Fonts?
There are two types of fonts: screen and printer. Beginning with design, both are needed. Screen fonts allow your screen to display the text. Printer fonts allow printers to make plates used to print the job. Design charges are inclusive of all fonts used in the design. Beyond the screen/printer designation, fonts are generally divided into two other camps: TrueType and Postscript. When possible we prefer to use Postscript fonts.
  • Galleys?
Galleys today simply mean a digital laser printout of the typeset book or journal. The galley is proofread on hardcopy.
  • Pages?
After galleys have been proofread and changes entered, the digital files are referred to as pages.
  • Shipping?
Books will be shipped directly from the printer to the destination of your choice. Books will be packed in crushproof boxes and settled onto pallets, which are then wrapped. Delivery to an outside delivery area is included in the total price. Inside delivery requires a minimal surcharge.
  • Page Proofs?
After the printer receives your files, the pressroom will make any adjustments necessary for the job to run on their equipment. Following this pre-press work, a digital copy will be printed. You will have an opportunity to review this (or we can do it for you) to check for any errors. This is required for text and cover.
  • Check Copy?
After signatures are printed, a set of three of each signature will be pulled randomly from different parts of the print run. The signatures will be folded and trimmed but not bound. You will have the opportunity to review these (or we can do it for you) to check for printing errors and quality of printing throughout the run. This applies to the text only.
